Two former geeks become 1980s punks, then party and go to concerts while deciding what to do with their lives.
SLC Punk is a scrappy, energetic coming-of-age film set in the unlikely punk scene of Mormon Utah. The fourth-wall breaking narration and irreverent tone give it a distinct voice, but the episodic, loosely connected vignettes mean the plot lacks strong cohesion. Matthew Lillard delivers a genuinely committed, charismatic performance that carries much of the film's energy, while the supporting cast is serviceable. Cinematography is functional and low-budget without particular visual distinction. The ending lands with unexpected emotional weight, elevating the film above its shaggy middle sections, but doesn't quite transcend into something truly exceptional. Its cult status is earned more by attitude and authenticity than by craft.
