Finding ʻOhana (2021)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

Two Brooklyn siblings' summer in a rural Oahu town takes an exciting turn when a journal pointing to long-lost treasure sets them on an adventure, leading them to reconnect with their Hawaiian heritage.

The Quartile Take

Finding 'Ohana is a fairly by-the-numbers Goonies-style family adventure transplanted to Hawaii. The plot follows well-worn treasure-hunt tropes without much surprise, and while the Hawaiian setting and cultural heritage angle add some warmth, the story beats are predictable. Acting is solid for a family film, with the young cast bringing reasonable energy. The Hawaiian landscapes are visually appealing and the cinematography captures the islands reasonably well without doing anything especially distinctive. Novelty is low — the film is essentially a nostalgic homage to 80s adventure films with a cultural twist that doesn't reinvent anything. The ending delivers a tidy, feel-good resolution that satisfies the genre's expectations without much resonance.
