Rescued as a child by the legendary assassin Moody and trained in the family business, Anna is the world’s most skilled contract killer. When Moody, the man who was like a father to her and taught her everything she needs to know about trust and survival, is brutally killed, Anna vows revenge. As she becomes entangled with an enigmatic killer whose attraction to her goes way beyond cat and mouse, their confrontation turns deadly and the loose ends of a life spent killing will weave themselves ever tighter.
The Protégé is a competent but formulaic action-thriller that hits familiar beats without much surprise. The plot—seasoned assassin seeks revenge for mentor's death while navigating a cat-and-mouse romance—is well-worn territory with few twists that feel earned. Acting elevates the material somewhat, with Maggie Q bringing physicality and presence, and Michael Keaton adding charismatic intrigue to their charged dynamic. Cinematography is serviceable with slick action staging across its international locations (Vietnam, Romania, London), though nothing visually distinctive. Novelty is low—the female assassin revenge narrative and the flirtatious adversary dynamic are genre staples executed competently rather than reinvented. The ending resolves ambiguously but feels undercooked, failing to pay off the emotional or romantic threads with satisfying weight.
