Rebel Ridge (2024)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

A former Marine confronts corruption in a small town when local law enforcement unjustly seizes the bag of cash he needs to post his cousin's bail.

The Quartile Take

Rebel Ridge is a competent and engaging action-thriller with a solid procedural backbone around civil asset forfeiture as a social issue, giving it some topical grounding. Jeremy Saulnier directs with assured tension-building, but the one-man-against-corrupt-system premise is well-worn genre territory, limiting its novelty. Aaron Pierre is compelling in the lead but the supporting cast is uneven. Cinematography is functional and occasionally atmospheric but not distinctive in the way Saulnier's earlier work (Blue Ruin, Green Room) was. The ending resolves satisfyingly within genre expectations without subverting them. A solid mid-tier streaming thriller, but not a landmark.
