After a remote diamond mine collapses in far northern Canada, an ice road driver must lead an impossible rescue mission over a frozen ocean to save the trapped miners.
The Ice Road offers a reasonably unique setting — the frozen Manitoba wilderness and the genuine tension of driving heavy trucks across cracking ice — which gives it some distinctive flavor. Liam Neeson anchors the film with his reliable action presence, and the supporting cast is serviceable. The cinematography captures the bleak, expansive icy landscape effectively. However, the plot leans heavily on action thriller clichés, including a fairly predictable corporate villain subplot that undercuts the more interesting survival premise. The ending resolves things in a fairly by-the-numbers fashion without much surprise or emotional payoff. A solid mid-tier action thriller that delivers on its core premise but doesn't transcend it.
