Renfield (2023)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

Having grown sick and tired of his centuries as Dracula's lackey, Renfield finds a new lease on life — and maybe even redemption — when he falls for feisty, perennially angry traffic cop Rebecca Quincy.

The Quartile Take

Renfield is a fun but uneven horror-comedy that leans heavily on its satirical premise — Dracula as an abusive partner, Renfield in a codependency support group — which provides a genuinely fresh comedic angle on classic material. Nicolas Cage chews scenery with gleeful commitment as Dracula, and the slapstick gore sequences are inventive if gratuitous. However, the plot quickly devolves into a generic mob-corruption thriller that undercuts the more interesting psychological satire, and the supporting characters (including the romantic lead) feel thinly written. Cinematography is functional but unremarkable, failing to fully commit to either gothic atmosphere or kinetic comedy. The ending resolves predictably without much payoff to the satirical setup, leaving the film feeling like a great sketch stretched thin.
