Two movie producers who owe money to the mob set up their aging movie star for an insurance scam to try and save themselves. But they wind up getting more than they ever imagined.
The Comeback Trail is a lightweight comedy with a familiar premise—insurance fraud via a dangerous film shoot—that leans heavily on its cast (De Niro, Jones, Freeman) for its appeal. The plot is predictable and formulaic, following a well-worn con-gone-right trajectory with few surprises. The cinematography is serviceable but unremarkable for the genre. Novelty is low; the concept of aging Hollywood and mob-debt comedies has been done before, and this doesn't bring a fresh enough voice. The ending is mildly satisfying given the comedic tone, wrapping things up warmly if predictably. The acting from the veteran leads elevates what is otherwise a middling production.
