The timeless tale of King Arthur and the legend of Camelot are retold in this passionate period drama. Arthur is reluctant to hand the crown to Lancelot, and Guinevere is torn between her loyalty to her husband and her growing love for his rival. But Lancelot must balance his loyalty to the throne with the rewards of true love.
First Knight is a competent but unremarkable Arthurian retelling that prioritizes romance over myth. The plot reduces the rich legend to a fairly conventional love triangle with little thematic depth. Sean Connery and Richard Gere deliver watchable performances, though Gere feels miscast as Lancelot. The cinematography is solid and period-appropriate without being visually distinctive. The film offers little new perspective on the well-worn Camelot legend, leaning heavily on familiar beats without a distinctive voice or craft. The ending resolves predictably and without much emotional resonance, undermining the tragedy the story could have achieved.
