When a straight-laced couple that has fun with a rowdy couple on vacation in Mexico return to the States, they discover that the crazy couple they met in Mexico followed them back home and decide to play tricks on them.
Vacation Friends is a fairly formulaic odd-couple comedy that leans heavily on well-worn fish-out-of-water and clashing-personalities tropes. The plot offers few surprises — straight-laced couple meets wild couple, chaos ensues, bonds form — following a predictable arc with little subversion. Acting is a relative bright spot, with John Cena delivering committed comedic energy and Lil Rel Howery providing reliable charm, elevating the material beyond what it deserves on paper. Cinematography is functional at best — the Mexico resort settings are pleasant but shot in a generic, TV-movie style with no visual ambition. Novelty is low; despite the likable cast, the concept and execution recycle familiar comedy setups without a distinctive voice or fresh angle. The ending resolves predictably with everyone reconciling and celebrating, hitting the expected beats of the genre without earning its warmth particularly well.
