Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

World-famous detective Benoit Blanc heads to Greece to peel back the layers of a mystery surrounding a tech billionaire and his eclectic crew of friends.

The Quartile Take

Glass Onion is a glossy, entertaining whodunit that leans hard into satirizing tech-bro billionaire culture. Daniel Craig's Benoit Blanc is a delight, and the ensemble cast — Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kate Hudson — brings considerable energy and charm, earning the acting a genuine 4. The plot is clever and self-aware in its first half, using a puzzle-box structure with real wit, but the second-half reveal undercuts some of its sophistication by leaning on a fairly blunt twist that trades complexity for crowd-pleasing simplicity. Cinematography is competent and sun-drenched but unremarkable for the genre. Novelty is present — the Greece setting, the satirical billionaire skewering, and Rian Johnson's confident voice give it personality — but as a sequel it walks familiar Blanc territory without significantly expanding the formula. The ending, built around a rather on-the-nose act of destruction as catharsis, feels dramatically thin and unearned compared to the intricate setup that preceded it.
