Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge (2020)

Quartile rating: 7.5/10 · 1 rating

After the vicious slaughter of his family by stone-cold mercenary Sub-Zero, Hanzo Hasashi is exiled to the torturous Netherrealm. There, in exchange for his servitude to the sinister Quan Chi, he’s given a chance to avenge his family – and is resurrected as Scorpion, a lost soul bent on revenge. Back on Earthrealm, Lord Raiden gathers a team of elite warriors – Shaolin monk Liu Kang, Special Forces officer Sonya Blade, and action star Johnny Cage – an unlikely band of heroes with one chance to save humanity. To do this, they must defeat Shang Tsung's horde of Outworld gladiators and reign over the Mortal Kombat tournament.

The Quartile Take

Scorpion's Revenge is a competent and entertaining animated adaptation of the Mortal Kombat mythos that leans into its R-rated violence with gusto. The plot follows the familiar tournament structure closely while weaving in Scorpion's revenge arc with decent emotional grounding. Voice acting is solid across the board without being remarkable. The animation is fluid and dynamic, especially during fight sequences, though the overall visual style is fairly conventional for adult animation. Novelty is limited — it's essentially a faithful retelling of source material many fans already know, without reinventing the formula. The ending delivers satisfying payoff for Scorpion's arc while setting up sequels, but it doesn't subvert expectations in any meaningful way.
