Slumberland (2022)

Quartile rating: 7.5/10 · 1 rating

The Quartile Take

Slumberland is a competent family fantasy adventure with a heartfelt emotional core about grief and loss. The plot follows a fairly predictable arc with few surprises, and the dreamworld concept, while visually imaginative in places, feels derivative of similar fantastical journey films. Jason Momoa brings energetic charm to his eccentric outlaw role, and the young lead carries the emotional weight reasonably well, but neither performance is exceptional. The cinematography has colorful, inventive dream sequences but nothing truly distinctive. The film's live-action remake/reimagining tag signals its lack of originality, and the execution rarely transcends its familiar formula. The ending is emotionally satisfying in a conventional way.
