The Talent of the Hornet (2020)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

Dj Steph is a young radio deejay on the rise, who gained a lot of popularity on social media and every evening hosts a radio show with a large following, during which he receives calls from his fans. One evening, a call chills him to the bone: a cold-blooded stranger announces on live radio that he plans to take his own life, making himself explode in the middle of the city.

The Quartile Take

The Talent of the Hornet builds an intriguing thriller premise around a radio DJ drawn into a live on-air hostage/suicide scenario, offering moderate tension and a timely social media angle. The plot is engaging enough to sustain interest but lacks the tightness and escalation needed to fully capitalize on its concept. Acting is serviceable but uneven, with the lead carrying more weight than the supporting cast can match. Cinematography is functional and occasionally stylish but largely unremarkable for the genre. The concept has some distinctiveness in its Italian context and radio-broadcast framing, though it echoes familiar thriller tropes. The ending fails to deliver a satisfying payoff to the tension built, feeling rushed and somewhat anticlimactic.
