The Rookie (1990)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

Veteran cop Nick Pulovski is used to playing musical partners; many of the partners he's had in the past have died on the job, and often as a result of Nick's risky tactics. But the rookie who's been assigned to help Nick bust a carjacking ring is almost as hotheaded as he is … and when Nick gets kidnapped, his newbie partner is his only hope.

The Quartile Take

The Rookie (1990) is a by-the-numbers buddy cop action film directed by and starring Clint Eastwood. The plot is thoroughly formulaic — veteran cop paired with a young hothead to bust a crime ring, with the veteran getting kidnapped and the rookie saving the day — offering nothing audiences hadn't seen many times before. Eastwood brings his usual gruff charisma and Charlie Sheen holds his own, making the acting the film's modest highlight, though neither is stretched. Cinematography is functional but unremarkable for the genre. Novelty is low; the film recycles tired tropes from countless prior buddy cop films with little distinctive voice or craft to set it apart. The ending resolves predictably and without much tension. Overall it lands as a mediocre, forgettable entry even within Eastwood's own filmography, consistent with its below-average reputation.
