The Quartile Take

The Rescue by Nat Geo/Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi is a masterfully crafted documentary about the 2018 Thai cave rescue. The storytelling is gripping with exceptional pacing, weaving archival footage with stunning recreations and intimate interviews. Cinematography earns a 4 for its remarkable blend of real footage and beautifully shot cave-diving recreations that put viewers inside the harrowing conditions. The plot earns a 4 as the filmmakers structure a known outcome into a genuinely suspenseful narrative, revealing layers of complexity most viewers never knew. The ending is emotionally resonant and well-earned despite being historically known. Acting is rated 3 as this is a documentary — interview subjects are compelling but it's not a traditional acting showcase. Novelty is 3 because while excellently executed, the cave rescue documentary sits within an established genre of survival/rescue docs, and the subject matter itself was already widely covered; the filmmakers elevate but don't radically reinvent the form.
