The Quartile Take

I Want You Back is a serviceable romantic comedy that benefits from genuine chemistry between Charlie Day and Jenny Slate, whose comedic timing elevates fairly formulaic material. The plot follows a well-worn rom-com blueprint — two heartbroken strangers team up to sabotage their exes' new relationships — and doesn't deviate meaningfully from genre expectations, keeping Novelty low. The cinematography is functional but unremarkable, typical of mid-budget studio rom-coms with no distinctive visual identity. The ending lands where audiences expect it to, delivering emotional satisfaction without real surprise. Acting is the film's strongest suit, with Day and Slate delivering charming, committed performances that make the predictable beats feel warmer than they might otherwise. A crowd-pleasing but derivative entry in the genre.
