Dangerous Lies (2020)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

After losing her waitressing job, Katie Franklin takes a job as a caretaker to a wealthy elderly man in his sprawling, empty Chicago estate. The two grow close, but when he unexpectedly passes away and names Katie as his sole heir, she and her husband Adam are pulled into a complex web of lies, deception, and murder. If she's going to survive, Katie will have to question everyone's motives — even the people she loves.

The Quartile Take

Dangerous Lies is a competent but formulaic Netflix thriller that hits familiar genre beats without much surprise. The plot recycles well-worn inheritance/mystery tropes with telegraphed twists and a predictable resolution. The acting is serviceable but unremarkable, with the leads delivering adequate performances that don't elevate the material. Cinematography is reasonably polished for a streaming production, making decent use of the estate setting. Novelty is low — the premise and execution follow a well-trodden path with nothing distinctive in its voice or craft. The ending resolves things neatly but without real impact or memorable payoff.
