A deadly airborne virus finds its way into the USA and starts killing off people at an epidemic rate. Col. Sam Daniels' job is to stop the virus spreading from a small town, which must be quarantined, and to prevent an over reaction by the White House.
Outbreak is a competent but formulaic thriller that hits familiar beats of the epidemic/government-conspiracy genre. The plot is engaging enough in its setup but devolves into a generic action-chase finale that undermines the medical tension. The ensemble cast (Dustin Hoffman, Morgan Freeman, Donald Sutherland) performs capably though no one is stretched beyond genre conventions. Cinematography is workmanlike Hollywood mid-budget fare with nothing distinctive to elevate it visually. Novelty suffers because the film synthesizes elements already well-trodden in outbreak narratives and military-cover-up thrillers without adding a fresh perspective. The ending feels rushed and overly neat, resolving the crisis with convenient heroics rather than earned dramatic weight.
