65 (2023)

Quartile rating: 4.5/10 · 2 ratings

65 million years ago, the only 2 survivors of a spaceship from Somaris that crash-landed on Earth, must fend off dinosaurs to reach the escape vessel in time before an imminent asteroid strike threatens to destroy the planet.

The Quartile Take

65 has a genuinely interesting high-concept premise — astronauts stranded on prehistoric Earth navigating dinosaurs before the extinction asteroid hits — but squanders it with thin characterization, a repetitive survival structure, and little emotional payoff. Adam Driver does what he can but the script gives him almost nothing to work with, and the surrogate father-daughter dynamic with Ariana Greenblatt feels underdeveloped. Visually the film is competent but murky and unremarkable, favoring dark, claustrophobic settings that obscure the dinosaur spectacle audiences might expect. The premise earns some Novelty credit for its specific mashup of sci-fi and prehistoric survival, but the execution is formulaic enough to limit that. The ending resolves predictably with minimal dramatic weight, failing to capitalize on the inherent tension of the countdown premise.
