A New Jersey construction worker goes from regular guy to aspiring spy when his long-lost high school sweetheart recruits him for an espionage mission.
The Union is a fairly generic spy-comedy with a formulaic fish-out-of-water premise. Halle Berry and Mark Wahlberg provide passable chemistry and lift the acting above the script's limitations, but the plot follows predictable beats of the reluctant amateur spy recruited by an old flame. Cinematography is serviceable but unremarkable for the genre. The concept of pairing a blue-collar everyman with a seasoned spy is well-worn territory, offering little novelty. The ending resolves neatly but without surprise or impact, consistent with its by-the-numbers approach.
