Setup (2011) is a low-budget crime thriller starring 50 Cent, Bruce Willis, and Ryan Phillippe that delivers a thoroughly generic heist-gone-wrong narrative with few surprises. The plot hits every expected beat—betrayal, revenge, mob alliances—without any meaningful subversion or tension. Acting is mediocre across the board; Willis and Phillippe appear disengaged in limited roles, while 50 Cent carries the lead with limited range. Cinematography is flat and workmanlike, typical of direct-to-video productions of this era. Novelty is extremely low—the film recycles tired genre conventions with no distinctive voice, style, or concept to set it apart from dozens of similar straight-to-video crime films. The ending resolves predictably with little emotional payoff, consistent with the film's formulaic approach throughout.
