Feel the Beat (2020)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

After failing to make it on Broadway, April returns to her hometown and reluctantly begins training a misfit group of young dancers for a competition.

The Quartile Take

Feel the Beat is a competent but formulaic feel-good dance movie that hits familiar beats: the flawed protagonist returning home, the ragtag group of underdogs, the redemption arc, and the climactic competition. Sofia Carson delivers a likable performance that elevates the material somewhat, and the young cast brings genuine charm. The cinematography is functional but unremarkable, typical of Netflix family fare. The ending delivers satisfying emotional payoff consistent with the genre. Novelty is low as the premise and execution closely follow well-worn templates from similar dance films.
