The Summit of the Gods (2021)

Quartile rating: 8/10 · 1 rating

A photojournalist's obsessive quest for the truth about the first expedition to Mt. Everest leads him to search for an esteemed climber who went missing.

The Quartile Take

The Summit of the Gods is a strikingly distinctive animated feature — a rare French animation tackling mountaineering with philosophical weight and austere beauty. The cinematography is genuinely exceptional, capturing the vertiginous scale and brutal texture of Everest with stunning rendered imagery that rivals live-action mountain films. Novelty is high: animated adult drama about alpine obsession is almost singular in the medium, adapting Jiro Taniguchi's manga with a tone of existential minimalism rarely seen in animation. The plot is solid — the dual-timeline investigative structure works well — though it occasionally feels methodical rather than gripping. The voice acting (French dub) is competent and well-suited but not especially distinguished. The ending is contemplative and thematically resonant but may leave some viewers wanting more resolution, landing it as above average rather than exceptional.
