Legendary Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear embarks on an intergalactic adventure alongside a group of ambitious recruits and his robot companion Sox.
Lightyear is a visually competent but narratively underwhelming spin-off that struggles to justify its existence. The time-dilation plot has interesting sci-fi potential but is executed in a formulaic, predictable manner with a twist villain that feels telegraphed. The voice acting is solid but unremarkable, with Chris Evans delivering a serviceable but not particularly memorable Buzz. Cinematography is polished Pixar quality but lacks the visual ambition of the studio's best work. As a concept, an origin story for a fictional toy's fictional hero is an intriguing meta-premise, but the film largely abandons that novelty in favor of a generic space adventure. The ending resolves too neatly and fails to resonate emotionally, lacking the punch that distinguished classic Pixar finales.
