Exactly one year after Tom meets Violet, he surprises her with a wedding ring. By all accounts, Tom and Violet are destined for their happily ever after. However, this engaged couple just keep getting tripped up on the long walk down the aisle.
The Five-Year Engagement is a broadly likable but overstuffed romantic comedy that stretches its premise thin over a nearly two-and-a-half-hour runtime. The plot follows a familiar will-they-won't-they structure without adding much fresh perspective — the obstacles feel manufactured and the pacing drags considerably in the middle act. Jason Segel and Emily Blunt share genuine chemistry and elevate the material beyond what it deserves, while the supporting cast (Alison Brie, Chris Pratt) provides comic energy. Visually it's a competent but unremarkable studio production. The ending resolves things in a satisfying if predictable way. Overall it's a mid-tier rom-com that coasts on its cast's charm.
