After hiding his loot and getting thrown in jail, brooding outlaw Ruby befriends Quentin, a dim-witted and garrulous giant. After Quentin botches a solo escape attempt, they make a break together. Unable to shake the clumsy Quentin, Ruby is forced to take him along as he pursues his former partners in crime to avenge the death of the woman he loved and get to the money.
Ruby & Quentin (Sur mes lèvres... non, actually L'emmerdeur remake / Tais-toi!) is a French buddy comedy pairing Gérard Depardieu and Jean Reno, whose chemistry elevates the film well above its formulaic odd-couple premise. The acting is the clear standout — Depardieu's manic buffoonery against Reno's stone-faced intensity is genuinely hilarious and skillfully executed. The plot is serviceable but follows a well-worn road: mismatched duo, chase, revenge arc — nothing surprising. Cinematography is workmanlike French genre fare with little visual distinction. Novelty is limited; the film recycles buddy-comedy and crime-caper conventions without adding much new, though the specific pairing gives it some personality. The ending wraps things up adequately but without particular punch or ambition.
