Chimpanzee (2012)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

A nature documentary centered on a family of chimps living in the Ivory Coast and Ugandan rain forests. Through Oscar, a little chimpanzee, we discover learning about life in the heart of the African tropical forest and follow his first steps in this world with humor, emotion and anguish. Following a tragedy, he finds himself separated from his mother and left alone to face the hostility of the jungle. Until he is picked up by an older chimpanzee, who will take him under her protection.

The Quartile Take

Chimpanzee is a solidly crafted Disney Nature documentary with stunning rainforest cinematography capturing intimate chimp behavior in remarkable detail — a genuine visual highlight. The narrative arc around Oscar is emotionally engaging and well-structured for the genre, giving it a slightly above-average plot by documentary standards. Acting doesn't really apply in a traditional sense (chimps are the subjects, narration is serviceable but unremarkable), so it scores below average. Novelty is limited — the Disney Nature formula of anthropomorphized wildlife storytelling with heartwarming arcs was already well-established, and this follows that template faithfully. The ending, with Oscar's adoption, provides satisfying emotional closure but isn't especially surprising or resonant beyond the genre norm.
