Safe (2012)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

After a former elite agent rescues a 12-year-old Chinese girl who's been abducted, they find themselves in the middle of a standoff between Triads, the Russian Mafia and high-level corrupt New York City politicians and police.

The Quartile Take

Safe is a competent but formulaic Jason Statham action vehicle that hits familiar beats: brooding ex-agent, imperiled child, corrupt city officials, warring criminal factions. The plot is serviceable but overly convoluted without earning its complexity, and the resolution feels rushed and unsatisfying. Statham delivers his trademark stoic physicality and the supporting cast is adequate. Cinematography is workmanlike with some solid action staging but nothing visually distinctive. Novelty is low — the premise recycled elements from Taken and similar genre entries without a singular voice or fresh angle. The ending ties things up too neatly without much dramatic payoff.
