Sophie and Vincent’s small butcher shop is on the brink of bankruptcy and their marriage is falling apart. Their lives are turned upside down when Vincent accidentally kills a vegan activist who vandalized their shop. Overwhelmed and terrified of being accused of murder, their only solution is to get rid of the body by turning it into ham. To their surprise the ham is so popular that it may save their business… that is if they’re ready to keep “hunting"!
Some Like It Rare is a French dark comedy-horror that mines the cannibalism-as-satire territory with modest charm. The premise cleverly skewers both vegan activism and carnivore culture, offering some genuine wit in its social commentary. The plot is functional but follows a fairly predictable escalation arc common to black comedies about accidental criminals going deeper into crime. The lead performances are competent and grounded enough to sell the absurd premise. Cinematography is workmanlike — nothing distinguishing about its visual language beyond serviceable French provincial aesthetics. The novelty is moderate: while cannibal dark comedies exist (Delicatessen, Raw), this specific class-warfare butcher shop angle has some freshness. The ending feels rushed and slightly unsatisfying, undercutting the satirical build-up without fully committing to either a dark or redemptive resolution.
