Bruce Wayne faces a deadly menace from his past, with the help of three former classmates: world-renowned martial artists Richard Dragon, Ben Turner and Lady Shiva.

The Quartile Take

Batman: Soul of the Dragon is a fun 1970s martial arts and blaxploitation pastiche that gives Bruce Wayne an interesting pre-Batman origin framing alongside DC martial arts legends Richard Dragon, Lady Shiva, and Bronze Tiger. The retro aesthetic and ensemble of street-level fighters is genuinely distinctive for a DC animated film, earning it some novelty points. However, the plot is relatively thin — a standard 'ancient evil cult' MacGuffin story — and the ending resolves too neatly and predictably to leave a lasting impression. Voice acting is solid across the board with competent but unremarkable delivery. The animation captures the grindhouse era convincingly with strong action choreography, though it never transcends its TV-movie budget limitations visually. An enjoyable niche curio that earns mild praise for its concept more than its execution.
