The mysterious murder of a US senator bearing the distinctive trademark of the legendary Soviet assassin 'Cassius', forces retired CIA operative, Paul Shepherson to team with rookie FBI agent, Ben Geary to solve the crime. Having spent his career chasing Cassius, Shepherdson is convinced his nemesis is long dead, but is pushed to take on the case by his former supervisor, Tom Highland. Geary, who wrote his Master's thesis on Shepherdson's pursuit of the Soviet killer, is certain that Cassius has resurfaced.
The Double is a formulaic Cold War spy thriller that leans heavily on well-worn tropes of the grizzled veteran paired with an eager rookie. The central twist — that Shepherdson is himself Cassius — is telegraphed early for attentive viewers and echoes similar reveals in the genre. Richard Gere and Topher Grace provide serviceable performances that elevate the material somewhat, but the script doesn't give them enough to work with. The cinematography is functional and unremarkable, befitting a mid-budget direct-to-video-adjacent release. The ending delivers its twist competently if not memorably. Overall a forgettable entry in the spy thriller genre that fails to distinguish itself despite an intriguing premise.
