The Big Year (2011)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

Three fanatical bird-watchers spend an entire year competing to spot the highest number of species as El Nino sends an extraordinary variety of rare breeds flying up into the U.S., but they quickly discover that there are more important things than coming out on top of the competition.

The Quartile Take

The Big Year is a genial, low-stakes comedy with an unusually specific niche premise — competitive birdwatching — that gives it some novelty value. The cast (Steve Martin, Jack Black, Owen Wilson) is charming and elevates the thin material, but the episodic structure and predictable life-lessons arc make the plot feel meandering and underdeveloped. Cinematography captures North American landscapes pleasantly but unremarkably. The ending resolves too neatly and sentimentally without much earned emotional payoff, leaving the film as a likable but forgettable curiosity.
