Metal Lords (2022)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

For teenage misfits Hunter and Kevin, the path to glory is clear: Devote themselves to metal. Win Battle of the Bands. And be worshipped like gods.

The Quartile Take

Metal Lords is a competent but fairly formulaic high school underdog/misfit story grafted onto a heavy metal setting. The plot hits familiar beats—outcasts chasing a dream, friendship tensions, romance subplot—without much subversion. The acting from the young cast is solid and enthusiastic, with Adrian Grenier lending some credibility. Cinematography is unremarkable, functional rather than inspired. The metal setting adds some flavor but doesn't make the film truly distinctive; School of Rock covered similar ground more memorably. The ending delivers a satisfying if predictable payoff at the Battle of the Bands, competently executed but not especially memorable.
