Knights of Badassdom (2014)

Quartile rating: 5.5/10 · 1 rating

Three best friends and dedicated roleplayers take to the woods to reenact a dungeons and dragons-like scenario as a live action role-playing game. Trouble arises when a prop spellbook purchased from the internet ends up being a genuine grimoire and they unwittingly conjure up a blood-lusting succubus from hell.

The Quartile Take

Knights of Badassdom is a fun but uneven horror-comedy that leans heavily on its LARP/D&D niche appeal. The premise is genuinely charming and the cast (Peter Dinklage, Ryan Kwanten, Steve Zahn) brings more energy than the material strictly deserves, elevating the acting above the script's limitations. The plot, however, is thin and inconsistent, struggling to balance comedy and horror effectively, while the cinematography is workmanlike at best. The LARP setting gives it some novelty and cult-appeal distinctiveness, but the actual execution of the succubus horror elements feels generic. The ending is rushed and unsatisfying, a known result of the troubled post-production history of the film.
