Alpha Dog (2006)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

Johnny Truelove likes to see himself as tough. He's the son of an underworld figure and a drug dealer. Johnny also likes to get tough when things don't go his way. When Jake Mazursky fails to pay up for Johnny, things get worse for the Mazursky family, as Johnny and his 'gang' kidnap Jake's 15 year old brother and hold him hostage.

The Quartile Take

Alpha Dog is a competent crime drama based on real events, with a strong ensemble cast delivering credible performances — particularly Ben Foster in a volatile turn and Anton Yelchin in a heartbreaking role. The plot is engaging but follows fairly familiar crime-gone-wrong territory without distinctive narrative innovation. Cinematography is serviceable but unremarkable, leaning on handheld docudrama aesthetics that were common in mid-2000s crime films. The novelty is limited as it treads well-worn ground of suburban drug culture crime stories. However, the ending — culminating in the cold, brutal murder of Zack and the documentary-style epilogue — is genuinely devastating and elevates the film significantly above its genre peers.
