Occupied France; Lebrac leads a play war between two rival kid gangs, but a girl he likes, who's Jewish, is in danger of being discovered by local Nazi sympathisers. Lebrac and the village must now respond to the reality of what's happening.
This 2011 French remake blends the classic childhood rivalry story with a wartime Jewish refugee subplot, giving it some emotional weight beyond the original. The plot competently interweaves the gang warfare with genuine wartime peril, though the tonal shift from playful to serious feels somewhat uneven. Acting from the child cast is serviceable and occasionally charming. Cinematography is pleasant but unremarkable, capturing rural occupied France adequately without distinctive visual flair. Novelty is limited — it's a remake of a beloved 1962 film adapted from an 1912 novel, and while the wartime Jewish angle adds a layer, the overall execution feels derivative. The ending provides emotional resolution but without particular surprise or power.
