Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating
A scheming raccoon fools a mismatched family of forest creatures into helping him repay a debt of food, by invading the new suburban sprawl that popped up while they were hibernating – and learns a lesson about family himself.
Over the Hedge is a competent, entertaining animated family film with a solid voice cast (Bruce Willis, Garry Shandling, Steve Carell) delivering energetic performances, but it never rises above its premise. The plot is a reasonably fun fish-out-of-water story about animals navigating suburbia, with decent heart, but it follows a predictable redemption arc without subverting expectations. The animation is polished but unremarkable for its era — DreamWorks style without the visual ambition of Pixar contemporaries. Novelty is low; the suburbia-satire angle and misfit-animal-family formula were well-worn even in 2006. The ending resolves neatly but formulaically, offering no real surprise or emotional punch beyond the expected reconciliation. A solid, enjoyable mid-tier animated feature that does what it sets out to do without distinguishing itself memorably.
