The Lost City (2022)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

Reclusive author Loretta Sage writes about exotic places in her popular adventure novels that feature a handsome cover model named Alan. While on tour promoting her new book with Alan, Loretta gets kidnapped by an eccentric billionaire who hopes she can lead him to the ancient city's lost treasure that featured in her latest story. Alan, determined to prove he can be a hero in real life and not just on the pages of her books, sets off to rescue her.

The Quartile Take

The Lost City is a competent but formulaic romantic action-comedy that leans heavily on well-worn romcom and adventure tropes without subverting or elevating them meaningfully. Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum have genuine chemistry and deliver likable performances, keeping the film watchable, but neither breaks new ground. The cinematography is functional and serviceable — exotic jungle settings are pleasant but shot without particular flair or distinction. The plot is by-the-numbers: kidnapping, reluctant partners, buried treasure, bickering leads who fall for each other — all telegraphed well in advance. Novelty is low as the film is essentially a glossy rehash of Romancing the Stone-style adventure romcoms with little distinctive voice or execution. The ending wraps up predictably and safely with minimal dramatic tension or surprise. Overall an amiable, forgettable crowd-pleaser that doesn't transcend its genre.
