In order to foil a terrorist plot, an FBI agent undergoes facial transplant surgery and assumes the identity of a criminal mastermind. The plan turns sour when the criminal wakes up prematurely and seeks revenge.
Face/Off is a gloriously unhinged high-concept action film that earns its cult status through sheer audacity. The premise — a face-transplant identity swap between an FBI agent and a psychopathic villain — is ludicrous but executed with complete commitment. John Travolta and Nicolas Cage deliver wildly entertaining dual performances, each mimicking the other's mannerisms with gleeful excess; it's genuinely exceptional acting in the context of maximalist action cinema. The novelty is undeniable: John Woo brings his balletic Hong Kong action sensibility to a premise no other filmmaker would have conceived quite this way, producing something utterly singular — slow-motion doves, dual-wielding, and operatic sentimentality fused into a fever dream. Plot logic is serviceable but the screenplay strains under its own concept, and the ending, while emotionally satisfying, is somewhat pat and conventional given how deliriously inventive the preceding two hours are. Cinematography is slick and stylish but serves the action rather than transcending it.
