Quartile rating: 5/10 · 1 rating
Sneaking out. Hooking up. Melting down. The cast and crew of a blockbuster action franchise attempt to shoot a sequel while quarantining at a posh hotel.
The Bubble is a satirical comedy about pandemic filmmaking that had a promising premise but largely squandered it. The plot is thin and repetitive, cycling through the same quarantine chaos without building to much. The ensemble cast—despite including talented performers like Karen Gillan, David Duchovny, and Leslie Mann—feels underutilized, with performances that range from game to listless. Cinematography is functional and unremarkable, fitting for a Netflix production but nothing distinctive. The novelty score earns a modest bump for its timely COVID-era satire and meta film-within-a-film conceit, even if execution falls short. The ending is rushed and unsatisfying, failing to pay off the ensemble's arc in any meaningful way. Overall a well below-average comedy that disappointed both critics and audiences.
