Back to the Outback (2021)

Quartile rating: 7.5/10 · 1 rating

Tired of being locked in a reptile house where humans gawk at them like they are monsters, a ragtag group of Australia’s deadliest creatures plot an escape from their zoo to the Outback, a place where they’ll fit in without being judged.

The Quartile Take

Back to the Outback is a charming but fairly formulaic animated adventure that leans heavily on the 'misfit animals escape captivity' template popularized by Madagascar and similar films. The Australian setting and focus on venomous/dangerous creatures gives it a modest boost in novelty, and the voice cast delivers competent work, but nothing stands out as exceptional. The cinematography is standard Netflix-budget 3D animation — functional and colorful but unremarkable. The ending wraps up predictably and without much emotional punch, feeling rushed and overly tidy for the themes it raises. A perfectly watchable family film that doesn't quite distinguish itself from the crowded genre.
