In the near future, a drone pilot is sent into a deadly militarized zone and must work with an android officer to locate a doomsday device.
Outside the Wire is a competent but formulaic near-future action thriller that blends familiar elements — the rogue android with a secret agenda, the drone pilot learning moral lessons about remote warfare, and a MacGuffin doomsday device. The plot follows predictable beats with a twist that's telegraphed early. Anthony Mackie brings charisma to his android role, elevating the acting above the generic material, while the supporting cast is serviceable. Cinematography is functional and workmanlike for the genre, with decent action staging but nothing visually distinctive. Novelty is low as the film recycles well-worn sci-fi war movie tropes without a unique voice or conception. The ending resolves in a rushed, unsatisfying manner that undermines whatever moral ambiguity the film was building toward.
