The School for Good and Evil (2022)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

Best friends Sophie and Agatha navigate an enchanted school for young heroes and villains — and find themselves on opposing sides of the battle between good and evil.

The Quartile Take

The School for Good and Evil offers a visually ambitious production with decent ensemble performances, but the plot feels overstuffed and struggles to balance its tonal shifts between comedy and earnest fantasy. Based on the YA novel, it follows fairly familiar chosen-one and good-vs-evil tropes without subverting them meaningfully, giving it low novelty. The cinematography has some strong moments with its fairy-tale aesthetic but is inconsistent. The ending feels rushed and unsatisfying, setting up sequels without delivering a truly complete story arc.
