Willy Wonka – chock-full of ideas and determined to change the world one delectable bite at a time – is proof that the best things in life begin with a dream, and if you’re lucky enough to meet Willy Wonka, anything is possible.
Wonka is a charming but narratively thin prequel that relies heavily on the goodwill generated by the beloved source material. The plot is a fairly conventional underdog-rises tale with a chocolate cartel as its villain, lacking the surreal depth of the original Dahl stories. Timothée Chalamet brings genuine charisma and sells the musical numbers convincingly, elevating what could have been a hollow exercise. The cinematography is colorful and visually pleasing but rarely transcends standard big-budget fantasy aesthetics. As a prequel to a well-known IP using a standard musical formula, its novelty is limited — it feels more like brand extension than singular vision. The ending is satisfying in a crowd-pleasing way, tying back to the original film's mythology in a manner that fans will enjoy, though it offers no real surprises.
