Run Fatboy Run is a genial but formulaic rom-com sports comedy that hits every predictable beat: lovable loser, romantic rival, underdog training montage, crowd-pleasing finish. Simon Pegg brings charm and comedic timing that elevates the material above its script's limitations, and the supporting cast (including Thandiwe Newton and Hank Azaria) is solid. Cinematography is functional and unremarkable. The premise blends the redemption sports movie with the rom-com in a way that feels well-trodden rather than fresh, and the ending resolves exactly as expected with little surprise. Enjoyable but thoroughly conventional.
