The Quartile Take

Green Snake (2021) is a visually stunning Chinese animated film that serves as a sequel/companion to White Snake, blending ancient mythology with a cyberpunk dystopian aesthetic in a genuinely striking and inventive way. The cinematography and visual design are exceptional — the juxtaposition of traditional Chinese mythology with a Blade Runner-esque cityscape is bold and executed with remarkable artistry. Its Novelty is high precisely because this cultural and genre fusion is unlike almost anything else in animation. The plot, while ambitious, occasionally struggles with pacing and tonal consistency as it navigates between its two worlds, and the emotional resolution feels somewhat incomplete. The voice acting is competent and serviceable but not a standout element. The ending, while visually grand, leaves some narrative threads feeling unresolved in a way that may frustrate rather than intrigue.
