Biggie: I Got a Story to Tell (2021)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

Christopher Wallace, AKA The Notorious B.I.G., remains one of Hip-Hop’s icons, renowned for his distinctive flow and autobiographical lyrics. This documentary celebrates his life via rare behind-the-scenes footage and the testimonies of his closest friends and family.

The Quartile Take

A solid if conventional music documentary that benefits from rare archival footage and intimate testimonials from family and friends. The behind-the-scenes material adds genuine warmth and humanizes Biggie beyond the legend, but the film largely follows the standard biographical documentary template — rise, genius, tragic death — without pushing the form in any meaningful direction. The cinematography is functional, relying heavily on archival footage of varying quality. Novelty suffers because the Biggie story has been told before (Notorious, 2009) and this doc doesn't radically reframe it. The ending, covering his murder, is emotionally resonant but unsurprising. A loving tribute that fans will appreciate, though it won't convert newcomers into devotees.
