In the wake of their friends' marriages and eventual offspring, longtime pals Julie and Jason decide to have a child together without becoming a couple. By becoming "time-share" parents, they reason, they can experience the joys of parenthood without significantly curbing their personal freedom. However, when Julie and Jason both become involved with others, they discover that they secretly harbor romantic feelings for each other.
Friends with Kids is a serviceable but formulaic romantic comedy-drama that telegraphs its ending from the first act. The concept of platonic co-parenting friends falling for each other isn't novel, and the execution follows a predictable rom-com arc. The ensemble cast (Adam Scott, Jennifer Westfeldt, Kristen Wiig, Jon Hamm) elevates the material with solid performances, but the script doesn't give them enough to work with. Cinematography is functional and unremarkable NYC indie fare. The ending resolves exactly as expected with little earned emotional payoff. A watchable but forgettable entry in the genre.
