Senior Year (2022)

A 37-year-old woman wakes up from a 22-year coma, and returns to the high school where she was once a popular cheerleader to finish her senior year and become prom queen.

The Quartile Take

Senior Year is a formulaic fish-out-of-water comedy that leans heavily on the well-worn premise of someone displaced in time struggling to adapt to modern norms. The plot follows predictable beats with little surprise, and the fish-out-of-water gags feel recycled from similar fare. Reese Witherspoon brings reasonable energy and commitment to the lead role, lifting the acting above its material, but the supporting cast is largely underutilized. Cinematography is serviceable Netflix-level production with nothing visually distinctive. The concept of a coma-induced time jump is not especially fresh, and the execution does little to elevate it beyond its premise. The ending resolves neatly and predictably, hitting expected notes without earned emotional resonance.
