Animal pals Alex, Marty, Melman, and Gloria are still trying to make it back to New York's Central Park Zoo. They are forced to take a detour to Europe to find the penguins and chimps who broke the bank at a Monte Carlo casino. When French animal-control officer Capitaine Chantel DuBois picks up their scent, Alex and company are forced to hide out in a traveling circus.
Madagascar 3 is a serviceable animated sequel that introduces a circus setting with some visual flair and energetic set pieces, but the plot is thin and formulaic even by franchise standards. The voice cast performs capably with their established characters, and the animation is colorful and kinetic — particularly the Afro Circus sequence which became memorable. However, the story recycles the 'trying to get home' premise from earlier entries without meaningful evolution, and DuBois as a villain is cartoonishly one-note. The ending resolves predictably with little surprise. Novelty is low given it's a by-the-numbers sequel with a slightly fresh circus backdrop but no distinctive voice or bold creative choices.
